Bishop England had two soccer signees as well, sending Sammy Friedrich to Wofford and Mackenzie McAvoy to Sewanee. Both helped the Bishops to state championships last spring. Friedrich and Aversano have played club soccer together since they were 10 years old and will be teaming up with a familiar face in Spartanburg in current Terriers midfielder and 2016 Wando graduate Sam Ross. “It’s helped me a lot,” Friedrich said of the highly competitive Lowcountry soccer circuit. “Last year’s high school season was some of the best soccer that I’ve been a part of. “Signing for Wofford is a great feeling. It’s a great program at the next level and I’m looking forward to this challenge. It’s a really big step in my career. Getting to where I am today is such a big moment and shows that hard work and perseverance really do pay off.” Also from Bishop England, Shawn Runey signed with Patrick Henry Community College baseball, while Brendan McHale finalized his longtime commitment to Sewanee. “I was a little nervous (about Sewanee) at first because it was so far from Charleston,” McHale said. “The coaches were always the ones who called me the most. After every AAU tournament or summer camp, they were checking in on me rather than just sporadically like some others. But to officially sign was probably the best feeling of my life.” McHale moved to Charleston the summer before his freshman year. Since then, he’s score more than 1,000 points in the Kelly green and last week led the Bishops to their first region championship since 2007. “Like most kids, I didn’t want to move away from my hometown, but I’ve built relationships here that will no doubt continue for a long time,” McHale said. “Growing up with my dad as a coach I’ve dreamed of playing college basketball practically since I was born. I don’t think there’s anything that can top the feeling of signing today, especially after winning the region last week.”
