West Ashley outlasts Bishop England

WEST ASHLEY — In a battle of talented quarterbacks Friday night at West Ashley Stadium, the Wildcats held off Bishop England, 35-27, for their second straight win to open the season. For West Ashley, junior quarterback Kenyatta Jenkins accounted for four touchdowns (two rushing, two passing). The Bishops' senior quarterback, Leo Albano, had three rushing TDs and one through the air. "That was two good quarterbacks out there," said West Ashley coach Bobby Marion. "Kenyatta is getting better and better at running the option, and Albano is a heck of a player. He's a winner." On the night, Jenkins ran for 163 yards and threw for 103 yards, completing 7 of 8 passing. Albano had 150 yards on the ground and 130 passing. West Ashley jumped in front, 14-0, midway through the second quarter, with Jenkins scoring on a 1-yard run and connecting with Dominique Kershaw on a 12-yard score. Albano scored on an 8-yard run to cut the lead in half, but Jenkins again connected with Kershaw from 46 yards on a flea flicker to make it 21-7 at half. The Wildcats scored on their first play from scrimmage in the second half as Jenkins scampered 57 yards to make it 28-7. The Battling Bishops then lived up to their name by scoring two quick touchdowns in a span of two minutes. First, Albano scored from 5 yards to make it 28-14 and break the school's all-time rushing touchdown record. Two minutes later, senior Jaquan Brown picked up a Jenkins fumble and rumbled 36 yards to the Wildcat 22-yard line. Two plays later, Albano threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Christian Greavu to close the gap to 28-21 after three quarters. West Ashley went back up by two scores in the fourth quarter as bruising fullback Yaphett Bienvenu rumbled in from the one yard line to make it 35-21. The Bishops completed the scoring when Greavu made a circus grab from 32 yards out to make it 35-27. Bishop England had one last chance when they got the ball at the Wildcat 37 with 6:19 remaining in the game. But three straight incomplete passes ended the threat. West Ashley ran out the clock, taking a knee at the Bishops 3-yard line as time expired. "We have to get better at eliminating mistakes," Marion said. The Wildcats were stymied by penalties all night, accumulating 12 flags, most at inopportune times.
