Season tipoff: East Cooper area lined with hardwood talent

There’s great news for East Cooper sports fans struggling to say goodbye to football season. The local basketball scene is loaded with a wealth of hardwood talent to soothe even the most stubborn of transitions. State champions return primed to defend their throne while new coaches hope to build the humble into contenders. This season’s slate is lined with both local rivalries and out-of-state matchups. There are high-flying bouncers who play above the rim and grounded sharp shooters who can light it up from long range. Offensive juggernauts and defensive stalwarts. Familiar faces will don new jerseys and established seniors hope to cement a legacy. Winter time is a chance to show and prove for area preps, all hoping to heat up the local gyms. Bishop England Battling Bishops Head coach: Bryan Grevey (8th season) Last season: 20-6 overall; Region 7-AAA champion; Lost state quarterfinals Returning starters: 2 Players to watch: Leo Albano, Sr., G Louis Griffith, Sr., F Cole Christy, Sr., F Peyton Doyle, Sr., G Taijon Simmons, Fresh., C Bishop England could go as many as 12 players deep on one of the most well-rounded teams it’s had in years. The Bishops can play quick with guard-heavy lineups or slow down and utilize the height of their versatile bigs. A large share of the production from last season’s region championship team graduated but expect the Bishops’ budding newcomers to push their seasoned veterans for playing time early. Grevey: “We have guys sitting the bench that could really be starters. The thing I like about this group is you don’t see much of a drop off in defense, rebounding and scoring when we start subbing. “We’ve been experimenting a lot, trying to come up with a good combination off the bench as well as in the starting lineup. Who we play on a certain night could depend on our opponent. We have the luxury, if we need to go big we can and if we need to go small we can do that too. This is a good group, very coachable. They all get along. It’s a fun team to coach.”
